Home At Last (HAL)
HAL matches adults with developmental disabilities and Host Families. This unique living option offers opportunity for inclusion into a 'family' relationship and the community for adults with varying abilities. Together adults with and without disabilities create lasting and supportive relationships which are mutually rewarding and inspiring.
Established in 1999, Home At Last (HAL) is a residential option which matches adults with developmental disabilities with families and individuals in the community, with the intention of increasing their opportunities for inclusion—both within the family relationship and in the community. Home At Last is a Family Home Agency or FHA, and operates as part of the state foster care system.
By living in a HAL home, people have the security of living with others, and a choice about who to live with. With a compatible host family, they gain the opportunity to become more independent and responsible adults through participation in the daily routines of the household.

Sharing Their Success

Buffy came to Home At Last in 2006. Prior to this, she had lived in a care home, but she had come to feel that “It was time to move on.” Buffy lived with her first Home Provider, Maria, for 2 years. Buffy calls Maria “a very special person to my heart.” When Maria married and moved out of the area, Buffy moved in with her current Home Provider, Kelyn.
Regarding the program, Buffy says: “Home At Last is a very good and special program for people who want to live with a family who supports them. HAL is like a big family—we go on trips and do activities and have birthday parties. HAL has been really good for me. My [home] provider has been a good friend. I want [potential] providers to know that having someone in their home is a very happy experience.”

Deb has been with Home At Last since 2005. She had originally lived with a HAL Provider in Stockton, but moved to Modesto to live with Home Provider Sheila and her husband Marty in 2006. Sheila and her family consider Deb to be part of their family. Deb is involved in all of the family get-togethers and activities. They enjoy doing things together, such as camping, gambling at Black Oak Casino, looking for bargains at yard sales, and visiting Great America.
Deb says: “I love Home At Last. I like going to work. I like coming home every day. Sheila and Marty are like the best mom and dad. Sometimes we get on each other’s nerves, but we talk it out like family.”
Sheila says: “I’m glad to have Deb in our home, both Marty and me are. We support each other and lean on each other, like family. And if we need help, we can always get help from HAL staff.”
